New Life Medical Addiction Services offers a unique outpatient detox treatment for drugs and alcohol that is becoming the preferred standard of care for many people seeking addiction treatment. It is also becoming a model for addiction recovery that is changing treatment for people in New Jersey and across the country.Outpatient detox from New Life Medical Addiction Services

At New Life, located in Marlton, NJ, patients struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol come to our facility during the day and then return to the comfort of their own homes at night. For many of our patients, this is the preferred path to successful recovery because they can continue to go to their jobs and maintain their obligations to their families and loved ones while engaging in active recovery.

Outpatient detox is not only effective, but it can also be provided at much lower cost than expensive 30-day in-patient detox and rehab. New Life Medical Addiction Services accepts a wide variety of insurance plans along with Medicare, Medicaid, and cash payments. Unlike many inpatient settings, we can tailor a program to almost anyone who is seeking help.

What is Outpatient Detox?

Detox for alcohol and drugs involves a patient’s body cleansing itself of the substances and toxins associated with their addiction. New Life’s professional and medical team creates a highly personalized program for each of its patients that meets their specific treatment needs. As a first step, we review a patient’s medical history so that we can create a custom-tailored program just for them.

New Life’s physicians can prescribe medications that can ease uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings. In some instances, these medications replace the drug that is being abused and then we help the clients by weening them off these medications over the course of weeks or months.

Outpatient Drug Detox

For opioid detox, the drug suboxone is often prescribed. Suboxone triggers the same part of the brain that is activated by opioid abuse, but it doesn’t produce the same high as the opioids. The brain gets tricked into thinking that it’s still getting the actual drug of abuse, which keeps withdrawal symptoms at bay. This allows our patients to focus on their therapy and recovery and reduces the likelihood of relapse.

Other medications can be given to address specific withdrawal symptoms. For instance, anti-nausea medications can be prescribed for gastrointestinal issues and over-the-counter painkillers are used to ease the aches and pains that can come with detox and withdrawal.

Outpatient Alcohol Detox in New Jersey

The following medications can be used in the alcohol detox process:

Naltrexone
Naltrexone can help reduce cravings during the alcohol detox stage. In the event of a relapse, naltrexone works by inhibiting the high feeling that alcohol may cause. Since naltrexone can activate withdrawal symptoms, the usual recommendation is to wait seven to 10 days before taking it. Naltrexone comes in both pill and injectable forms. The tablet form of naltrexone is known under the brand names ReVia and Depade and the injectable form is known as Vivitrol.

Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines (benzos) are frequently used to treat withdrawal symptoms during the alcohol detox phase. They are used to help relax a patient’s nervous system and can also be prescribed to treat the anxiety, insomnia, and muscle spasms that can accompany alcohol detox. Benzodiazepines come in short-acting and long-acting versions.

Acamprosate
Since long-term alcohol abuse can have a significant impact on how the brain looks and works, Acamprosate may be prescribed. Acamprosate, also know by the brand name Campral, is prescribed to help a patient’s brain begin to function normally again after the cessation of alcohol consumption. Acamprosate works to reduce alcohol cravings, but it will not produce unwanted effects for the patient if alcohol is consumed.

The Role of Addiction Counseling

While the bulk of therapy takes place once the person has stabilized after detox and withdrawal, counseling at New Life may begin during the detox phase. Psychological support is a critical component of this early stage of recovery and, if a patient doesn’t receive adequate support during detox, relapse is more likely to occur.

New Life’s patients meet with counselors and support staff when they come to our addiction clinic for outpatient detox. Ensuring that each patient has a strong support system at home in the form of family, loved ones and friends is also a critical part of the planning process at admission.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For some patients, a more intensive outpatient program is needed. At New Life, our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a structured, intensive program for individuals who need flexibility to attend work, school, or other responsibilities but need little more support than a traditional outpatient program.
